It is reported that schools and government institutions in Sri Lanka's major cities were closed on Monday for a week at a time when a severe fuel shortage almost brought the country to a standstill. The crisis has led to protests, political unrest and growing food shortages.
Sri Lanka, with a population of 23million, is experiencing the most serious economic crisis in decades. The food inflation rate is up to 57%. In addition, the lack of foreign exchange reserves and high food prices make it difficult for the government to import basic materials.
The United Nations has warned that an imminent "terrible humanitarian crisis" is coming, and millions of people need assistance.
